When Mama Roux first opened their doors in November 2011, I considered it as a welcome addition to the Athens downtown food scene. Within a short period of time it gained many fans and today it’s considered as a real neighborhood gem . . . frequented and loved by locals and visitors alike!
Situated in one of the City’s busy pedestrian areas and a stone throw away from many of Athens’ historic treasures, the place has a cozy artsy urban feeling about it . . . café/eatery by day, resto bar by night!
The food focuses on simple ethnic dishes with many vegetarian options . . . a kind of global fusion cuisine that is share friendly and reasonably priced too!
On my last visit, with a group of Icelandic ladies, we started by ordering really gorgeous tasting warm cocktails . . . mine served with fresh rosemary which I loved!
We then went on to enjoy a selection of flavorful must have dishes including the Meze Sampler, Quesadillas and my favorite Egg Noodles with Thai Chicken Curry, coconut milk, red peppers, lemon grass and fresh coriander. Everything we ate was truly fresh and bursting with flavor!
For dessert, they offer a small selection of really yummy sweet treats! If I remember correctly we ordered one of each with lots of teaspoons to share and taste!
I really liked the Lemon Meringue tart and the Chocolate Brownie with ice-cream and a fruit sauce was also . . . truly outstanding!
At the time I remember thinking . . . maybe I should pop in for a cup of coffee and a sweet on one of my many walkabouts in central Athens . . . or even better, for one of those warm cozy cocktails that really hit the mark!
Whatever you fancy . . . I hope you’ll enjoy this relaxed, hip neighborhood eatery with its friendly service, nice smooth music and lovely cocktails . . . as much as I do!
