Welcome, adventure seekers and travel enthusiasts!
Once again, buckle up and join me in reminiscing about another unforgettable road trip that I took in September with Icelandic besties through the enchanting Peloponnese region of Greece. This time, our journey took us through the hidden gems of Nafplio, Leonidio, and Monemvasia with their scenic landscapes, rich history, and a generous dose of laid-back Mediterranean vibes.
Nafplio: Where History Meets Charm
Our escapade began in the picturesque town of Nafplio, nestled on the Argolic Gulf. Steeped in history, Nafplio boasts elegant neoclassical architecture, cobblestone streets, and a captivating Venetian fortress that overlooks the town. As you wander through the winding alleys with their lovely shops, be sure to indulge in local delicacies at charming tavernas and soak in the coastal views that stretch as far as the eye can see.
Here we stayed at the Amalia Hotel that is situated just outside the town. It has a nice garden and a great outdoor swimming pool that was perfect for relaxing after our long strolls in town.
Leonidio: A Climber's Paradise
Next on our itinerary was the climbing haven of Leonidio. Tucked away beneath the imposing peaks of the Parnon Mountains, this quaint town is a magnet for rock climbing enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned climber or a novice looking to try your hand at this exhilarating sport, Leonidio's limestone cliffs offer a thrilling playground against a backdrop of rugged natural beauty.
If you are not a climber, like myself, then I suggest you stroll around town and enjoy, as I did, the scenery while my friends tackled some of the more strenuous hikes and novice climbing... followed by relaxation by the hotel pool and an early dinner at my favorite restaurant in town that serves some of the best pizzas I've tasted on my travels in Greece!
In Leonidio, we stayed at the stunning Archontiko Chioti Boutique Hotel and Spa in Kynouria, in the marked historical and traditional settlement of Leonidio that I had found, by chance, on an earlier trip to the area . . . that truly embodies the architectural charm of the region.
Here, apart from the cozy rooms and the staff's professional and friendly service, I really like their breakfast buffet with its delightful and delicious homemade items that you can enjoy inside or as we did, in the hotel's garden and/or poolside.
Monemvasia: The Fairytale Fortress
Our final destination was the dreamlike Monemvasia, a fortified town perched on a rocky islet off the southeastern coast of the Peloponnese.
Accessible only by a narrow causeway, Monemvasia transports you back in time with its medieval architecture, charming boutiques, and breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. Lose yourself in the labyrinthine streets of this car-free enclave and uncover its storied past at every turn... or do like my fit besties did, hike up to the top of the Monemvasia rock, feel exhilarated, and enjoy the moment!
In Monemvasia, we stayed at the Alkinoi Resort & Spa Alkinoi Resort & Spa with its modern facilities, friendly staff, and a top-notch outdoor swimming pool filled with seawater that I love, as well as a direct view of the rocky islet of Monemvasia and the nearby area. Again, I had stayed here on an earlier visit, and I was truly happy to revisit!
Embrace the Journey
As we concluded this year's road trip through the Peloponnese, I joined by friends in remembering that the true essence of travel lies not only in the destinations we reach but, in the moments, we savor along the way.
From enjoying the local cuisine to engaging with friendly locals, each pit stop on this journey offered us a glimpse into the soul of Greece. So, rev up your engines, roll down the windows, and embrace the freedom of the open road – for the true beauty of travel often lies in the uncharted paths we dare to explore.
Hope some of you reading this blog post will be as lucky as we were to embark on an adventure like no other, experiencing the magic of some of the enchanting areas of the Peloponnese, and making lots and lots of happy memories!
Until soon again!
Karitas
