Homemade Doggy Treats!

Writer: Karitas MitrogogosKaritas Mitrogogos

Homemade dog treats are easy and fun to make and always a big hit with our adorable four-legged lovable friends!

I started making the recipe I’m sharing with you today during the time I lived in Teheran, in the late 80’s, where dog food and dog treats were nonexistent. So, instead of bringing in treats from abroad, I brought in, amongst other things, lots of various types of flour and olive oil and with the eggs, chicken and/or beef I bought through “black market” avenues in Teheran, I started making simple doggie treats for Aida, our German Sheppard dog who adored them!

It goes without saying that these doggie treats have been real favorites amongst all our family dogs, and I normally make a bunch before Easter or the Christmas holidays to give as presents to all my doggie friends.

The photos in this blog post with recipe, were taken by Carlo Raciti, a dear friend and very talented photographer . . . as part of a Xmas series of photos with Toska (our 3rd German Sheppard) who loved Carlo . . . and, of course, the doggy treats too!

Thanks so much Carlo!  These photos always bring back so many happy memories any time of the year!

Biscuit Recipe

Ingredients

400 g whole wheat flour

400 g bread flour

2 tblsp brown sugar

1 cup olive oil

3 large eggs

1 cup chicken stock – room temperature

1 cup low fat milk

Preparation Method

In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, bread flower and brown sugar & mix.

Slowly stir in the eggs, olive oil, chicken stock and low-fat milk.

Mix to form dough which is quite firm but smooth and workable. If required, adjust thickness of dough by adding a little extra flour or little water (the exact amount will depend on the type of flour you are using).

Knead until you have soft, elastic dough. Cover tightly (plastic wrap works well) and let sit for 30 minutes.

Roll the dough out to 1 ½ cm thick. Using a bone shaped cookie cutter, cut out biscuits and carefully place on sheet pans lined with baking paper.

Place in pre-heated oven, 175-180C, for about 50 minutes or until biscuits are brown and more importantly . . . rock hard when touched!

Cool biscuits and then store in an airtight container. . .. making sure to keep them far away from your dog’s reach!

Tips!

  • There are two ways to make the dough: using a mixer with a pastry hook . . . or if you prefer the old-fashioned way . . . by hand!

  • If you don't have special cookie cutters . . .instead, you can always use some sort of glasses; like shot glasses . . . or just roll out the dough and cut sticks or any other shape you like.

Yield:  Depends on size of cookie cutter but I normally get at least 55 – 60 biscuits from this recipe.
