In my previous blog entry, I noted that exploring the numerous delightful wineries on Long Island is an experience I strongly suggest, especially for enthusiasts of wine and cuisine!

With over 50 vineyards dotting the region, Long Island is nurturing a growing reputation for quality wines that are gaining recognition both nationally and internationally. The East End's climate is particularly noteworthy; it resembles some classic European wine regions, such as Bordeaux and Burgundy, with its unique combination of warm summers and cool maritime breezes. This climate enables winemakers to cultivate grapes that flourish in these conditions, allowing them to craft exceptional varietals that reflect the terroir of the region.

During a visit to the area last summer, I attended an outdoor concert where I stumbled upon a booth showcasing local wines. Eager to learn more, I struck up a conversation a friendly man serving the wine, who turned out to be Anthony Sannino, the passionate and committed co-owner of the Sannino winery in Cutchogue, Long Island's wine region.

Following our conversation, I promised to visit the winery for a distinctive wine experience . . . not just to taste and appreciate a glass of wine, but also to witness firsthand how this family-operated vineyard combines tradition with innovation, leading its guests and visitors through a journey of exquisite flavors and rich heritage.

Regrettably, I wasn't able to visit the winery during the summer, but at the end of December, my friend John and I went to the winery and enjoyed its festive, inviting, and cozy ambiance . . . and were fortunate to encounter Anthony once more, who kindly gave us a tour and made us feel at home.

At the Sannino Winery, the blend of tradition and innovation was apparent in all facets of the vineyard's operations. The winemaking process is carefully designed, employing both classic methods and contemporary advancements to create wines that are high in quality and unique in character.

Visitors can indulge in a variety of tastings, ranging from robust reds to crisp whites, each sip uncovering the complexity and depth that comes from the meticulous grape cultivation, the Long Island terroir and the craftsmanship of the winemakers.

John & I chose a flight combination that hit the spot! Whether you're an experienced wine enthusiast or just starting to discover the world of wine, the well-informed staff are ready to share their expertise and guide you through the tasting journey. This personalized attention ensures that every guest departs with a greater appreciation for wine and memorable experiences to cherish.

We especially appreciated the wine tasting flight, featuring a variety of both white and red wines. Moreover, we also sampled their special holiday spiced wine, called Glögg in Iceland (my home country) which was remarkable. Nonetheless, I think the Glögg I make each year for the Advent/Christmas season is a bit more flavorful.

I discussed my thoughts on the Glögg with Anthony, who was curious about my version . . . and once we agreed on the secret ingredients that made it unique, we shifted focus, and he shared with us, insights into the winery's winemaking methods, the traits of each varietal, and several pairing recommendations to elevate the guests' experience at the winery.

Final Thoughts!

The Sannino Winery, a remarkable gem known not only for its outstanding wines but also for the inspiring story of its founders, Anthony and Sandra Sannino. Their adventure started with a deep passion for winemaking, driving them to follow their dreams in the heart of Long Island’s wine region. With a commitment to sustainable farming practices and a focus on producing small-batch wines, Sannino Winery has carved out a niche for itself by emphasizing quality over quantity.

In addition to being a venue for wine enjoyment, the Winery acts as a hub for community events and educational activities that enhance understanding and appreciation of winemaking. It exemplifies the potential of this picturesque region, enriching its dynamic culture and continuing its development as a leading wine destination.

Many thanks Anthony for an unforgettable & distinct wine experience. John and I loved it!
